Five races on tap as Texan Le Mans Champion Ben Keating Set to Race at COTA on Labor Day
22 August 2024 (Austin, TX) —The field is set, and the schedule is locked in as officials have released the entry list and timetable for the Lone Star Le Mans as the FIA World Endurance Championship (WEC) returns to the Circuit of the Americas on Labor Day weekend.
The event will see a large and highly competitive 36-car field, comprised of 18 entries in the top Hypercar class and 18 machines in the LMGT3 category as the globe-trotting championship makes a return to the Texas facility for the first time since February, 2020.
In addition to the field full of makes that include Ferrari, Lamborghini, Cadillac and Toyota, the entry list also revealed a notable new name as Texas-born Le Mans champion Ben Keating has joined the fray to race the No. 88 Ford Mustang LMGT3 for Proton Competition at the Lone Star Le Mans, driving along with a pair of Scandinavian co-drivers with Mikkel Pedersen (DNK) and Dennis Olsen (NOR)
Keating is one of four drivers representing the USA at home in the Lone Star Le Mans: Ian James (Heart of Racing Aston Martin), Simon Mann (Vista AF Corse Ferrari) and Ryan Hardwick (Proton Competition Ford Mustang).
Several well known American racing teams will be in action, as Cadillac Racing/Chip Ganassi Racing, and Heart of Racing compete under the USA flag in the six-hour Sunday feature, along with Team Penske, which runs the Porsche factory Hypercar effort and can also consider COTA its home race.
The driving and team talent in the field can not be denied, with 37 drivers (28 Hypercar drivers, nine GT3) who have won at Le Mans on the entry list, including 15 that have taken the overall victory (Buemi four times; Hartley three times; Bamber and Lotterer two times; Fuoco, Molina, Nielsen, Pier Guidi/Calado, Giovinazzi, Conway, Kobayashi, Lopez, Jani, and Duval once).
Aston Martin has dominated previous Lone Star Le Mans events, winning GTE pro four times and GTE Am five times. The second-most wins in Texas goes to Porsche outfits with four, then Audi, G-Drive Racing, Signatech Alpine and Ferrari teams on two apiece, with Rebellion Racing, KCMG and United Autosports winning one time each. Toyota has never won the #Lone Star Le Mans, in six attempts. Its best result of P2 came in both 2013 and 2020, both by Sebastien Buemi’s car, meaning the series’ winningest driver has also never won in the Lone Star state.
Friday will feature practice for the World Endurance Championship runners, with Saturday setting the stage for the dramatic Hyperpole qualifying session as well as one Ford Mustang Challenge and one Lamborghini Super Trofeo series race. Sunday will launch with one race apiece for both the Ford Mustang Challenge and Lamborghini Super Trofeo series ahead of Sunday’s six hour Lone Star Le Mans feature.
