{"id":1040,"date":"2018-07-09T15:35:24","date_gmt":"2018-07-09T19:35:24","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sundaymanagement.com\/?p=1040"},"modified":"2023-05-03T15:50:22","modified_gmt":"2023-05-03T19:50:22","slug":"double-win-weekend-at-cota-for-woods-and-ely-in-pirelli-trophy-west-usa","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sundaymanagement.com\/index.php\/2018\/07\/09\/double-win-weekend-at-cota-for-woods-and-ely-in-pirelli-trophy-west-usa\/","title":{"rendered":"Double-Win Weekend at COTA for Woods and Ely in Pirelli Trophy West USA"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>AUSTIN, Texas (9 July 2018) \u2013 After Saturday\u2019s Pirelli Trophy West USA race action that included heavy rains,<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>Sunday featured a day of sunshine to cap a fantastic weekend of racing at the Circuit of the Americas.\u00a0<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Despite the different conditions, it was a similar roster of runners who raced to the front on Sunday as the teams and drivers relished the weekend at the Formula 1-grade facility.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Doubling up on their weekend of wins were Kevin Woods (Diamond), Preston Calvert (Diamond Masters), Laura Ely (Bronze) and Mike Vess (Silver) as they swept the weekend. Sean McAlister turned his Saturday frustration into a Platinum class win on Sunday to score one win on the weekend.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-1525\" src=\"http:\/\/www.competentmotorsport.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/1_RM13584-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" \/>With twenty-nine Porsche GT3 and GT4 Cup cars competing in five different classes, it was an active day of racing on the 3.427-mile, 20-turn course at Circuit of the Americas: Diamond and Diamond Masters (2017-2018 991.2 GT3 Cup), Platinum (2015-16 991.1 GT3 Cup), Gold (2010-2013 997.2 GT3 Cup), Silver (Cayman Clubsport GT4 MR) and Bronze (2016 Cayman Clubsport GT4 Trophy) classes.<\/p>\n<p>Woods\u2019 TruSpeed AutoSport Porsche was forced into an honest pace by Jonah Yokubaitis, but pulled away from pole position and led all 15 laps of the race to win by 3.510-seconds. Woods also turned the race\u2019s fast lap on the way to his eighth win of the season.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was another fun race,\u201d Woods said. \u201cIt was actually more fun than yesterday because Jonah (Yokubaitis) was really good today. The car was a little bit looser than yesterday, but it was still good.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>I had a good start and just tried to set the pace. Jonah was coming hard, but he made one little mistake that gave me a gap and I held that to the end.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Calvert started second in his Diamond Masters-class Competition Motorsports Porsche and fell just off the pace that was set by Woods and Yokubaitis. Instead, the three-time race winner battled with the Diamond class\u2019 Tom Haacker after shaking free of teammate and class rival Michael Zuieback early in the race.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u201cI had the pleasure of starting second, but Jonah got an excellent start and he ended up slipping by me in Turn One,\u201d Calvert said. \u201cIt was a good move. I stayed with him and Kevin Woods for quite a while, and just tried to run the best race that I could.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>I got a lot of pressure later in the race from Tom Haacker, who really was driving well this weekend. He pressured me pretty hard, and eventually I was able to pull away a little bit.\u201d<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>McAlister\u2019s Competition Motorsports machine picked up the battle with Zuieback for fifth and sixth overall, claiming the top five overall finish with a last lap pass. The win was a redemption of sorts for McAlister, who spun in a similar situation on Saturday and fell to the bottom of the results.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u201cI played it a little bit safer today,\u201d McAlister said, comparing his two races this weekend. \u201cI probably could have made a pass once or twice, but I also made a lot of mistakes today. It was fun and it was clean and it was good. I was definitely not as mad and a lot more calm coming into the pits. Yesterday was horrible, I did not feel good about it!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The GT4 overall and Silver class win went to Vess, who may not have had the raw pace of Ely in the Bronze class but stayed consistent to the checkered flag.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>That allowed him to get by Ely\u2019s Black Sheep Racing on lap 11, when Ely \u2013 who by her own admission had struggled with the corner all weekend \u2013 spun on her own in Turn 19.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Vess went from challenger to all alone in his NOLAsport Porsche Cayman to take the win after starting second.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was a hard race,\u201d Vess said. \u201cLaura is very strong, and all I could do was put some pressure on her and hope she made a mistake. That\u2019s the only shot I had. Turn 19 got pretty slick, and she got a little wide, and it made her spin. That gave me the opportunity to get around her.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ely was still in control of the Bronze race, even after the first spin, but a repeat incident on lap 13 pushed her back to Race Technik\u2019s Paul Nemschoff. Ely rejoined just in front of the charging Nemschoff, and then outlasted him to the finish for the win.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u201cI had a pretty comfortable lead, so I was just trying to keep the pace up,\u201d Ely said. \u201cI\u2019d been having problems with\u00a0(Turn)\u00a019 all weekend, so I was just trying to hit it better. One time, I hit it all wrong and lost control and spun out. Mike (McAlister) passed me, which is ok, I\u2019m not racing him for\u00a0class.\u00a0I got back together and then I did the same exact thing. Luckily, I was able to turn it around before Paul came by.\u201d<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Overall, the weekend was deemed a tremendous success by Competent Motorsport President Greg Franz. Franz also added a surprise announcement as the series looks forward to 2019.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis weekend exceeded our expectations,\u201d Franz said. \u201cNot because of the track, which is the best in the United States, or our drivers, but because of the other things we were concerned about like the weather. Everywhere we go, people tell us that the Pirelli Trophy West USA brings the best weather!<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe big news is that we have our plans confirmed to come back here next year. We\u2019ll be at COTA May 30-June 2, 2019, so our teams can start making their plans now.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Next up for the Pirelli Trophy West USA will be two races at WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca, September 6-9, alongside the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship.
