The\u00a0IMSA\u00a0WeatherTech\u00a0SportsCar\u00a0Championship kicks off the season each year with the Roar Before the 24 at Daytona International Speedway. The 2020 edition was my first experience at the event, not only working but ever.<\/p>\n

Daytona is a landmark in the racing industry and\u00a0the venue\u00a0comes to\u00a0mind\u00a0when\u00a0thinking of\u00a0iconic\u00a0motorsports\u00a0locations. My first visit to the track\u00a0was\u00a0in 2009 at the age of 12 years old \u2013 too young of an age to really appreciate the history that was made around me.<\/p>\n

The weekend kicked off at full speed with media\u00a0day\u00a0on Thursday. 39\u00a0WeatherTech\u00a0entries for the 2020 Rolex 24 at Daytona brings over 150 drivers from around the world to the marquee event. Every single one of those drivers is sent through a rodeo of interviews, photographs and more to prep for the race and the entirety of the 2020 season. Media day immediately\u00a0awakens\u00a0one mentally and physically from the off-season break.<\/p>\n

Not only is\u00a0the\u00a0Roar a weekend of testing for the\u00a0IMSA\u00a0WeatherTech\u00a0SportsCar\u00a0Championship but\u00a0it\u00a0also hosts the opening round for\u00a0the\u00a0IMSA Prototype Challenge (IPC) with a three-hour race around the 3.56-mile road course. JR III Racing joined\u00a0Sunday Group\u00a0Management\u2019s roster of clients\u00a0for the 2020 season and are competing in the IPC for the very first time.\u00a0Appointed as the point for JR III\u00a0Racing, I am tasked with handling all\u00a0its\u00a0PR needs in all aspects,\u00a0from on-site social media to press release writing and beyond.<\/p>\n

Meeting a new array of crew and drivers can be a\u00a0challenge\u00a0having to remember several new names while\u00a0also\u00a0learning the personalities that make up a team. Joining the dynamic of JR III\u00a0Racing\u00a0was seamless. Team owner, Billy Glavin, created an inviting environment with crew who\u00a0were\u00a0helpful and kind moments after just meeting me. JR III\u00a0Racing\u00a0drivers,\u00a0Greg and Eric Palmer were experiencing\u00a0the\u00a0Roar\u00a0Before the 24\u00a0for the first time as well, so we all took in the sights and sounds together.<\/p>\n

Also on-track during the Roar weekend was another new addition to Sunday Group\u2019s roster of clients this year. Taylor Hagler is an up-and-coming racer in the No. 77 L.A. Honda World entry competing in the IMSA Michelin Pilot Challenge. Hagler too was new to Daytona International Speedway. Working with Hagler included\u00a0learning the ins and outs of her time on track but also getting to know her as a person in order to help\u00a0boost\u00a0her profile\u00a0to\u00a0the media. Working with someone who is my own age and has a similar personality does not carry the nerves\u00a0that usually come with getting to know someone new, but it was like catching up with an old friend.<\/p>\n

Managing a jam-packed schedule can be tiring but it also presents\u00a0the\u00a0opportunity to use all\u00a0that\u00a0I have learned\u00a0from\u00a0my time with Sunday Group while settling into my new role as well. While\u00a0it is\u00a0just the first\u00a0event on the schedule,\u00a0the\u00a0Roar was an exceptional experience to get back into the groove\u00a0of race season. Sunshine and 80 degrees aren\u2019t a bad way to spend a day at a racetrack either, but I truly believe any day at a racetrack is a good day.\u00a0The\u00a0Roar was no different. I am excited to see how the iconic Rolex 24 Hours at Daytona changes the environment of the track and how it builds on the foundation set in place by the opening weekend.<\/p>\n

As the racing season gets going, I am looking forward to experiencing my first full season in my role as Digital Content Curator and expanding my skill set in the public relations industry. The next stop: the Rolex 24 at Daytona.<\/p>\n
