Monterey, Calif. (11 October 2017<\/span><\/span>) \u2013 With the season-finale of the 2017 Pirelli GT3 Cup Trophy USA this weekend at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca, the stage is set for the most thrilling competition of the year yet. Having visited seven classic circuits across the country, Pirelli GT3 Cup Trophy USA returns to Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca for the second time this season with its largest field to date of 38 Porsche entries.<\/p>\n

A remarkable 24 different drivers have won throughout the first 14 races of the season across the five different Pirelli GT3 Cup Trophy USA class categories. The Pirelli GT3 Cup Trophy USA double-header, which is run in conjunction with the International GT Challenge endurance event, features three different Porsche GT3 Cup car Classes: The Diamond Class (991 GT3 Cup \u2013 2014-2016), the Platinum Class (997.2 GT3 Cup \u2013 2010-2013), and the Silver Class (Cayman GT4 Cup \u2013 2016-2017). Masters categories are offered for the Diamond and Silver classes.<\/p>\n

\u00a0With five championship titles on the line, the competition is sure to be as fierce as ever in Races 15 and 16. In addition to the full-season series drivers, several new racers will vie for victory as the large field of Porsche machines takes to the 2.238-mile Northern California road course.<\/p>\n

In the Diamond category, Loren Beggs (No. 08 911 Design Porsche 991 GT3 Cup) leads the way over young guns Max Root (No. 07 GT Technik Porsche 991 GT3 Cup) and Alex Kirby (No. 01 Aasco Motorsports Porsche 991 GT3 Cup).

\n\u201cWe are excited for the return to Laguna Seca,\u201d offered Beggs. \u201cEveryone here at the 911 Design shop has pitched in to get the logistics done, cars, truck and trailer ready for the last event of the year.\u00a0 We had a great race weekend the last time we were at Laguna Seca. I was able to finish third\u00a0on Saturday<\/span><\/span>\u00a0with very competitive times and won the race\u00a0on Sunday<\/span><\/span>. We have a great setup for the car and we should able to fine tune the setup and improve on the last outing. I am entering the weekend with a 42 point lead over second place so I need to make sure I keep my nose clean in both races to win the championship, but I am facing some stiff competition.\u201d<\/p>\n

Russell Ward (No. 35\u00a0WinWard Racing Porsche 991 GT3 Cup), who missed the COTA and Road America rounds because of the flooding in Texas after Hurricane Harvey, returns to competition and sits fourth in the standings. He recently competed at the Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca track in the IMSA Continental Tire SportsCar Challenge event and finished sixth while driving a Porsche.<\/p>\n

Russell\u2019s father, Bryce (No. 57\u00a0WinWard Racing Porsche 991 GT3 Cup), who was also forced to miss the COTA and Road America rounds because of the flooding, remains at the top of the Diamond Masters championship standings heading into the final event of the year. Utah race winner Michael Zuieback (No. 2 Discount Tire \/ Competition Motorsports Porsche 991 GT3 Cup) and Mike McAlister (No. 18 Competition Motorsports Porsche 991 GT3 Cup) look to make up ground in the championship this weekend.<\/p>\n

\u201cI can\u2019t believe this is the last weekend, but Laguna is a great place to end the season!\u201d said Bryce Ward. \u201cHaving missed Road America and\u00a0the COTA events because of Hurricane Harvey, I am looking forward to getting back in the car, and wish all those impacted by the Hurricanes a speedy recovery. The championship is wide open with Michael (Zuieback), Mike (McAlister), Dave (Elsner) and myself all in with a chance to win it. I hope to be right back on the pace as these guys have been really fast at the last two events.\u201d<\/p>\n

The championship battle is a tight one in the Diamond Masters division with second through fourth separated by only 10 points.<\/p>\n

In the Platinum class, it\u2019s been a race between teammates for most of the year with TruSpeed Autosport drivers all at the top of the charts. Ray Shahi (No. 65 Sterling Collision Porsche 997 GT3 Cup) currently leads the championship with Larry Schnur (No. 32 FuelSafe Porsche 997 GT3 Cup) and Jim Slavik (No. 89 Grainger Porsche 997 GT3 Cup) in second and third, respectively.<\/p>\n

Jeff Kearl (No. 26 Rearden Racing Porsche Cayman Clubsport GT4) and Sean McAlister (No. 00 Competition Motorsports Porsche Cayman Clubsport GT4) have been in the heat of battle for the championship title all year long. Kearl gained an advantage in the previous event at Road America when McAlister was involved in a weekend-ending crash that prevented him from taking part in\u00a0Sunday\u2019s<\/span><\/span>\u00a0race.
\nIn the Silver Masters category, it\u2019s been Steve Goldman (No. 1 Competition Motorsports Porsche Cayman Clubsport GT4) that\u2019s led the way but not without some tough competition from Martin Brauns (No. 59 Flying Lizard Porsche Cayman Clubsport GT4), Carl Toffelmire (No. 62 Competition Motorsports Porsche Cayman Clubsport GT4) and most recently, series newcomer Laura Ely (No. 09 Competition Motorsports Porsche Cayman Clubsport GT4).<\/p>\n

Notable new entries for the season-finale event include: Flying Lizard founder Seth Neiman in the No. 4 Flying Lizard Porsche Cayman Clubsport GT4, former IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship driver Michael Avenatti in the No. 21 Competition Motorsports Porsche Cayman Clubsport GT4, and Tim James who is traveling from New Zealand to compete in the season-finale event with the No. 3 Freem USA Porsche Cayman Clubsport GT4.<\/p>\n
