Austin, Texas (3 September 2017) \u2013 It was another big day of Pirelli GT3 Cup Trophy USA racing at Circuit of the Americas on Sunday when two drivers claimed their first-ever Pirelli GT3 Cup Trophy USA victories in Race 12 at the Austin, Texas circuit.<\/p>\n

The first-time winners were Alex Kirby of Aasco Motorsports in the Diamond category and Carl Toffelmire of Competition Motorsports in the Silver Masters class.<\/p>\n

Sunday\u2019s competition brought a second day of hot temperatures and sunny skies to the 3.4-mile road course and once again the racing ran caution-free all the way from the green flag to the checkered flag.<\/span><\/p>\n

Max Root (No. 08 GT Technik\u00a0Porsche GT3 Cup) scored his second consecutive pole position Sunday morning and led the way at the drop of the green. While he was able to pull away with a large gap over the field on Saturday, it was not the case in Race 12 on Sunday as Loren Beggs (No. 08 911 Designs\u00a0Porsche GT3 Cup) stayed right with him through the first several laps.<\/p>\n

The two swapped positions various times through several laps of tight racing. That close competition resulted in a slight touch between the two which saw the No. 08 of Root take a quick spin. Kirby, who sat third, had a bird\u2019s-eye view of the contact and capitalized to take the race lead. Beggs was ultimately forced to pit lane because of damage to the radiator and retired on Lap 8.\"\"<\/p>\n

Kirby took the victory by nearly 10 seconds with Root, who had the fastest lap of the race, second at the finish.<\/p>\n

\u201cOnce I saw Max (Root) and Loren (Beggs) fighting in front of me I knew it was just going to slow them down so I was just trying to catch up,\u201d said Kirby following the race. \u201cI just waited for them to duke it out and in the end it worked out well for me. We started with a real conservative set up for the beginning of the race. We knew it was going to get really hot and that the tires were going to heat up. Once I got a healthy lead I drove smooth and kept the tires in good condition.\u201d<\/p>\n

Preston Calvert delivered another stellar performance at the wheel of the No. 71 Competition Motorsports\u00a0Porsche GT3 Cup\u00a0machine to take his second straight win of the weekend in the Diamond Masters division. The result was especially rewarding as it marked his fifth and final race event of the weekend \u2013 having also participated in three Pirelli World Challenge races in addition to his Pirelli GT3 Cup events.<\/p>\n

\u201cFirst and foremost, Bob Faieta and Competition Motorsports were awesome in getting me back up into the grid with about a minute to spare \u2013 I got\u00a0\"\"right in the car after the World Challenge race,\u201d said Calvert of his back-to-back races on Sunday. \u201cWe had a very fast, clean and safe start and I ended up holding position and then gaining a position. I got by (Max) Root whose tires were wearing down but he managed to get back by me. I had Michael Zuieback in my rearview mirrors the whole time but I managed to hold a gap on him and just brought it home.\u201d<\/p>\n

Calvert\u2019s teammates Michael Zuieback (No. 2 Discount Tires\u00a0Porsche GT3 Cup) and Mike McAlister (No. 18 Competition Motorsports\u00a0Porsche GT3 Cup) rounded out the Diamond Masters top-three to make it an all Competition Motorsports podium.<\/p>\n

It was a familiar face on the top step of the podium in the Platinum category as TruSpeed Autosport driver Ray Shahi took his 11th\u00a0victory of the season in the No. 65 Sterling Collision\u00a0Porsche GT3 Cup. He\u2019s won all but two races so far this year.<\/p>\n

\u201cToday was easier, it wasn\u2019t as hot and slippery as it was yesterday,\u201d said Shahi of the win. \u201cToday I knew where the grip was on the track. My Newport Beach Porsche GT3 Cup was amazing and my team did a great job. I wanted to make sure I could find the grip and once I did I just put my head down and walked away with the lead.\u201d\"\"<\/p>\n

Shahi\u2019s TruSpeed Autosport teammate Larry Schnur (No. 32 FuelSafe\u00a0Porsche GT3 Cup) and Robert Gardner of PCS Motorsports (No. 33\u00a0Porsche GT3 Cup) rounded out the Platinum podium.<\/p>\n

In the Silver class it seemed to be Sean McAlister\u2019s day as he looked to take his third win of the season. He opened the race from the pole position in the No. 00 Competition Motorsports\u00a0Porsche Cayman ClubSport GT4\u00a0and led every single lap \u2013 except for the final one when a mechanical issue forced him to stop on track on the very last lap.<\/p>\n

Jeff Kearl, who had been running second in the No. 26 Rearden Racing Porsche just behind McAlister, benefitted and snuck through to take the victory. Michael Kim of Competition Motorsports (No. 21\u00a0Porsche Cayman ClubSport GT4) and Tim James of Freem (No. 03\u00a0Porsche Cayman ClubSport GT4) completed the Silver class podium.<\/p>\n

\u201cSometimes a little luck is all it takes,\u201d said Kearl. \u201cI think it was the reverse of what happened yesterday where he got ahead of me early and then I\u00a0\"\"started over-driving the car to try and catch him. Then my tires started to wear down faster but luckily it ended up going my way in the end.\u201d<\/p>\n

It was also heartbreak for the race leader in Silver Masters as a late race mechanical issue saw Competition Motorsports\u2019 Laura Ely pull the No. 09\u00a0Porsche Cayman ClubSport GT4off\u00a0track with just laps to go. She had led from the very beginning of the race which was all the more remarkable considering she had only just received her license six months ago and was competing in her first-ever Pirelli GT3 Cup Trophy USA event.<\/p>\n

Carl Toffelmire, who had been running right with Ely up until that point, took his first-ever victory after two seasons of Pirelli GT3 Cup Trophy competition \u2013 besting current Silver Masters Championship leader Steve Goldman (No. 1 Competition Motorsports\u00a0Porsche Cayman ClubSport GT4) at the line by nearly seven seconds.<\/p>\n

\u201cLaura (Ely) and I were going at it \u2013 I\u2019d pick up a tenth here and she\u2019d take a tenth back,\u201d said Toffelmire. \u201cShe\u2019s really a great competitor and very feisty. It\u2019s really great to have someone that competitive door handle to door handle. We were very clean and I really enjoyed being able to stand on top of the podium after almost two seasons of trying. Once I was in the lead I tried not to make any mistakes. You then try to mind the gap behind you and make sure you don\u2019t goof up. I didn\u2019t want to push too hard, I just wanted to keep the car together and cross the finish line with the car in one\u00a0\"\"piece.\u201d<\/p>\n

Competent Motorsport President Greg Franz was pleased with the Circuit of the Americas event and looking forward to the final two races of the 2017 championship.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt was another fantastic weekend out here at Circuit of the Americas for all of our competitors,\u201d said Franz. \u201cWe had two completely green flag races which really shows the race craft of these drivers. We raced in some pretty hot and difficult conditions and we came away with two new race winners this weekend. It doesn\u2019t get any more exciting than that! We\u2019ll look forward to much of the same at Road America in three weeks.\u201d<\/p>\n
