A fourth and a third place finish for the No. 18 RS1/Race Brew 0.0% by Momentum Brewery/PT Autosport/Porsche Naples Porsche 911 GT3 R last month at Road America dented the team’s title hopes, but Sedgwick believes the RS1 team has what it takes to get right back in the battle.

“The priority will be to get the car in a good place where we can break through and regain some points,” said Sedgwick. “Barber is so fast and flowing that you spend a large percentage of time in the corners, so it’s the type of track that makes setup absolutely crucial. There are also more opportunities to make a mistake when the car isn’t totally right, since the track is so physical – there are really no places to take a breath, so you have to get everything right. The track is tough on drivers, but at least it’s less so in the sports car than it is in, say, an open wheel car.”

Similar to his experience level with Sonoma and VIR, Sedgwick has coached at Barber but never raced there. But he believes the perceived lack of experience actually has its benefits.

“I don’t necessarily think that’s a bad thing,” said Sedgwick. “I’ve picked up the new tracks pretty quickly, whereas on tracks I raced in the Porsche Carrera Cup North America series, I’ve had to delete my baked-in references. So it’s a double-edged situation – you’re familiar with a track but you have a number of habits you have to break. Porsche has been quick at Barber through the years so hopefully we can continue that trend.”

As a longtime sports car team manager, PT Autosport team principal Jason Myers has been coming to Barber for years, so he can speak to both the beauty of the facility, and the pressure the weekend will bring.

“We are really looking forward to being back at Barber,” said Myers. “I’ve been coming here for 20 years and there is so much to see – the area surrounding the track, the track itself and how beautifully laid out and manicured it is, and of course, all the sculptures. But, we’re here to race! Alex, Jan, and RS1 are still firmly in the championship race and I think Barber will be a track at which the Porsche can flex its muscles a bit. Alex is really showing a good deal of maturity, showing just what kind of solid co-driver he can become as he looks to continue furthering his career evolution to include endurance sportscar racing here in North America and beyond.”

The GT World Challenge America series will contest two 90-minute races at Barber Motorsports Park.
