(30 September 2025) \u2013<\/strong>\u00a0Lime Rock Park\u2019s long-forgotten \u201cMountain Course\u201d will come to life on Sunday, Oct. 12, with the Lime Rock Park Epic presented by Domestique Events.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Back in 1955 when Jim Vaill decided to build a road racing circuit at his father\u2019s sand and gravel pit, he envisioned building two options. The first was a 1.5-mile Grand Prix circuit that has been in use \u2013 with only minor alterations \u2013 since 1957. Vaill also proposed a Mountain Circuit that would extend the front straight past the first turn, taking a loop through mountainous terrain, and then rejoining the circuit at the exit of Turn 2. That option would lengthen the track to three miles, with an elevation change of more than 300 feet.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>European racing veteran John Fitch \u2013 who had recently relocated to the Lime Rock area \u2013 was excited about the proposed circuit, knowing that a course of that length could bring professional racing \u2013 such as the Formula One Grand Prix \u2013 to Lime Rock.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Vaill even made a rough cut of the extension through the woods. The idea was soon abandoned, though. The terrain proved to be very rough \u2013 and too expensive to clear and then pave to make it suitable for competition. The extension would cost between $500,000-$750,000 \u2013 around $8 million in today\u2019s dollars.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>While the proposed track was unsuitable for sports car racing, it\u2019s perfect for off-road bicycles.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The Mountain Course was used a year ago for the Lime Rock Park Epic, which returns bigger for 2025. Riders compete in three divisions, with the top two classes using the Mountain Course at the start and finish. The Epic group tackles a 70-mile course with 5,000 feet of climbing, while the Explorer group covers 55 miles and 3,700 feet of elevation. All routes begin and end with a lap on the historic raceway and feature scenic gravel sectors, homemade rest stop food, and a chef-prepared meal.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>E-bikes are welcome on the Explorer and Express routes (non-competitive).
