WEC drivers again a strong presence in IMSA North American championship
SEBRING (11 March 2025) – The FIA World Endurance Championship (WEC) will be well represented in this weekend’s 73rd running of the Mobil 1 Twelve Hours of Sebring, with 39 drivers who competed in the recent WEC season-opening Qatar 1812 Km entered in the second round of the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship.
The entry includes 25 drivers from WEC’s Hypercar class and14 from LMGT3 who will be racing in the grueling 12-hour event. The IMSA WeatherTech Championship has four classes.
IMSA’s GTP machines correspond to the WEC Hypercar, with Porsche, Cadillac, BMW and Aston Martin using the same cars to compete in both series.
The GTD Pro and GTD categories have similar rules to LMGT3, hosting many of the globally recognized marques that also compete in LMGT3 . Driver rankings determine the two classes. IMSA also utilizes a Le Mans Prototype 2 (LMP2) class, Sebring’s first 12-hour race was held in 1952, on a layout which was originally utilized for training pilots for World War II. Currently using a 3.74-mile layout adjoining active runways, the circuit has been paved and modified over the years but still retains its bumpy character.
Ferrari opened the 2025 WEC campaign with a podium sweep at Qatar in Ferrari 499P Hypercars. While Ferrari has yet to race in GTP, two of its factory drivers will race in GT Daytona. Antonio Fuoco, who took the overall victory at Qatar in the Ferrari AF Corse Hypercar, will drive the No. 47 Cetilar Racing Ferrari 296 GT3 that won Sebring’s GTD category three years ago. Alessandro Pier Guidi, third at Qatar in AF Corse’s sister Ferrari 499P, will drive the No. 21 AF Corse Ferrari 296 GT3, also in GTD.
BMW M Team WRT will bring the same lineups and similar Hypercars that saw the team place both cars in the top 10 at Qatar. Kevin Magnussen and Dries Vanthoor, who took fourth in the No. 15 BMW M Hybrid V-8 at Qatar, will team at Sebring in the No. 24 for BMW M Team RLL, partly owned by American legend Bobby Rahal. Robin Frijns and Sheldon van der Linde – seventh at Qatar – share RLL’s No. 25.
Porsche will have four cars on the grid, including entries by Porsche Penske Motorsport and Proton Competition that compete in both WEC and IMSA. Penske finished 1-3 in the IMSA season-opening Rolex 24 At Daytona, and will include WEC regulars Mathieu Jaminet, Kevin Estre and Laurens VanThoor in its two-car lineup. Neil Jani and Nico Pino run Proton’s Porsche Hypercar in both series, while teammate Nico Varrone will pilot a Corvette in GTD Pro.
Cadillac will be represented by three cars for its V-Series R, including drivers Will Stevens, Earl Bamber, Sebastien Bourdais from Cadillac Hertz Team Jota’s two-car WEC entry.
Sebring will mark the first competition of the Aston Martin Valkrie Hypercar in Noprth America. The Aston Martin Thor Team will field a single entry, the No. 23 Valkrie for WEC regulars Ross Gunn, Alex Riberas and Roman De Angelis. The Valkyrie debuted with a two-car entry at Qatar a fortnight ago in WEC competition.
In LMGT3, Qatar class winner TF Sport will be represented by Jonny Edgar, who will drive AO Racing’s No. 99 ORECA in LMP2.
The North American outing for the WEC regulars proceeds their visit to Texas for the 2025 Lone Star Le Mans, September 7-9 at Austin’s Circuit of the Americas.
Practice for the Sebring event begins on Thursday with three sessions, beginning at 10:05 a.m. (all times EDT). Four 15-minute qualifying sessions for each class begin on Friday at 11:25 a.m. The 73rd event takes the green flag at 10:10 a.m. on Saturday.
